It is said Dempsey began boxing in the small mining towns of Colorado under the name "Kid Blackie."
Also said was that Dempsey's nickname "The Manassa Mauler" haunted potential opponents all around the Country.
It was September 23, 1926 that Jack Dempsey was defeated by Gene Tunney and lost his Heavyweight Title. In 1927 Dempsey once again was defeated by Tunney in the match  "The battle of the long count" because of a call by the Referee that Dempsey did not return to a neutral corner after Tunney was down. Three rounds later Tunney won the match.

Mr. Dale Ruff tells of old timers in Manassa recalling Jack Dempsey as being a pretty scrappy fellow. text.
In a newspaper interview, Marciano called Dempsey the best ever. Read that from Teddy Hayes book.(Dempsey's trainer). AND Hayes who was in the corner also of Jack Johnson and saw them all including Ali, said Dempsey was the best ever. Think about it, Johnson, Jeffries, Tunney, Louis, Marciano, Liston, Ali, he saw them all. He said the only fighter close was Jack Johnson. He said that would be a great fight. Food for thought from a former fighter/trainer. Teddy Hayes.
